[South African Faces] Four folio hand-coloured lithographed plates in later marbled wrappers. They are nicely preserved in a modern folio 1/4 dark green morocco and tan cloth box with matching gilt title labels to the upper cover and spine. Alberti accompanied Gen. J.W. Janssens when he traveled to the cape as Governor of the Colony under the Batavian Republic in 1802. Alberti was a Captain in the 5th Battalion of the Corps de Waldeck and the following year was sent to Fort Frederick in Algoa Bay, where he took the direction of affairs relating to the Kaffirs and Hottentots and acted as landrost. The original drawings were done on the spot by Baron de Howen and worked up by Smies in Amsterdam, and then engraved and aquatinted by Portman. Howen was a Russian officer of artillery; obviously, a gifted amateur, and Jacob Smies, known chiefly as a caricaturist, was employed to give the work professional polish. Coloured plates in order: 1.
