GIRARDIN, Rene-Louis.
Laurent Guyot.
Vues pittoresques, plans, des Jardins d’Ermenonville.

Ermenonville park, as created by the Marquis René-Louis de Girardin (1735-1808) and appreciated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It was the substantial fortune that his grandfather René Hatte, a tax farmer , bequeathed to him in 1762 that allowed René de Girardin to buy out the shares of the other heirs in the Ermenonville estate and to redevelop it subsequently. The château was then only a fairly ordinary building and the valley floors were nothing but marshes.
