Voyages Pittoresque en Allemagne (partie méridionale & partie septentrionale)
Xavier Marmier (1808 - 1892 in Paris) was a French man of letters, traveler, and translator of northern European literature. The author did much to encourage the study of Scandinavian and German literature in France, publishing translations & performed his own production.

2 volumes in-4to, reliés plein chagrin brun foncé, dos à nerfs et caissons dorés, toutes tranches dorées (reliure éditeur). 24 gravures hors-texte dont 4 coloriées, et 20, dont 2 coloriées pour la partie septentrionale. L’auteur, membre de l'Académie française , a beaucoup voyagé dans les régions nordiques d’où il a rapporté récits et écrits sur la littérature, l'histoire et la géographie de ces régions. 2 vol. (complete). 24 + 20 copper engr., 6 hand-coloured. Fresh & crisp copy. In tan pebble cloth with design in blind to boards, spine comprised of five compartments, gilt title in the second compartment, repeat gilt design to others. All edges are gilt. Cream-coloured 'silk' endpapers. The outer edge of boards slightly rubbed and faded (damp stained?), tissue guards to plates, slight foxing throughout the text - else good.
