By the age of 19, Waldeck had explored the Cape of Good Hope. He had also studied art under French artist David. Understanding art helped Waldeck capture his findings on his travels more vividly on paper, aiding documentation. After selling most of his drawings of the Palenque ruins to the French Government, his work was published in 1863. He was made a member of the Council of American Archeology in 1836.
