FIRST EDITION of this detailed and essential work on Sardinia by Alberto La Marmora, Count de Ferrero (1789-1863), complete with the rare atlas. The text volume, divided into six parts, contains extensive chapters on the (natural) history, geography, population, administration, agriculture, and industry of Sardinia. The atlas is seldom found with the text volume and includes seven brightly coloured plates after drawings by Giuseppe Cominotti (1792-1833), illustrating the Sardinian culture, costumes and folklore.

Text vol. contemporary quarter calf, title in gilt to spine with decorative raised bands, extremities slightly rubbed, marbled boards and endpapers, yellow edges; Atlas: contemporary quarter calf gilt preserving the original wrappers, marbled boards, and endpapers. Text vol., folding lithographed frontispiece, one full-page lithograph by d'Azelio after Cominotti, two hand-coloured, and three folding tables. Atlas with a hand-coloured map by A. de la Marmora after Joumar, six tables (two hand-coloured) by Moulin, and seven hand-coloured plates (one double-page) by Bezard and Badin after Cominotti, all lithographed. (4), IX, (1), 511 pp. The author was an officer in the French and later Italian army. He travelled extensively in Sardinia and was one of the first to study the (natural) history and culture of the island. The frontispiece shows the inquisitive author with his dog in a Sardinian landscape, surrounded by scientific instruments.
