Visit to the Monastery of La Trappe in 1817.

A book of notes taken while traveling through France. The author describes the villages and landmarks he visited. La Trappe and the country of La Vendee made a lasting impression on Fellowes. The author also visited Convent of the Chartreux, Forests of Le Perche, Soeurs de la Charite, Alencon, Laval, Vitre, Nantes, Le Bocage, and Orleans.

Tall octavo. Contemporary full green straight-grain morocco elaborately gilt-decorated spine and boards, raised bands, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles. Fourth edition with a charming fore-edge painting of the La Trappe monastery in addition to the usual 12 hand-coloured aquatints, one vignette, one plate in outline, and one hand-coloured etching. The first edition of Fellowes's travel book appeared in 1818, written from notes taken on a tour through Le Perche Normandy, Bretagne, Poitou, Anjou, Le Bocage, Touraine, Orleanois, and the environs of Paris. Abbey 91 (calls for Tour d'Oudon on the River Loire" as frontispiece; this copy has "View of the Monastery of La Trappe" as frontispiece). See Tooley 213. The previous owner has penciled "View of the Monastery of La Trappe" on verso of front free endpaper. Pages are clean and bright with only occasional offsetting. A fine copy beautifully bound. The 12th century Abbey of La Trappe was situated in Normandy, about 100 km from Paris, in an isolated valley surrounded by forest and lakes. The Abbey was destroyed at an early date but was repurchased & given back to the Trappists in 1815, who rebuilt on the ruins of the original Abbey. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece.
