MADDOX, Willes.
Views of Lansdown Tower, Bath.
Shortly after William Beckford died in 1844, the book 'Views of Lansdown Tower' was published, revealing the extraordinary building, interiors, and collection he had created at his Tower in Bath. Beckford's Tower, known initially as Lansdown Tower, is an architectural folly built in neo-classical style on Lansdown Hill, just outside Bath, Somerset, England. The Tower and its attached railings are designated as a Grade I listed building. Along with the adjoining Lansdown Cemetery, it is Grade II listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England.

Large folio pp. [iv including lithographic dedication] 10 with chromolithographic title mounted on card six tinted lithographic illustrations in the text and 13 tinted hand coloured and partly varnished lithographic plates mounted on 12 cards with tissue guards present; only marginal minimal spotting; original publisher's red half morocco over cloth-covered boards front cover lettered in gilt a little rubbed and spotted re-backed. This copy has the lithographic title without imprint and year. The list of subscribers is only hinted at in a pencil inscription on the rear fly-leaf, and there are a few manuscript corrections and marks to the text. On the verso of the leaf 'To the Reader' is a lithographed facsimile of a William Beckford letter not mentioned by Abbey. Also not in the bibliographic description is a woodcut of Beckford's tombstone at the end of the text underneath, which is pasted an autograph note in ink signed by William Bright concerning Beckford's interment in Lansdown Tower. After selling the gothic Fonthill, Beckford built Lansdown Tower in the latest Italianate style to house his later collections; four of the plates illustrate some of the objets d'art, including ceramics ivories and metalware besides furniture. Coloured plates in order: 1. Title page. View of Tower. 2. Exterior of Landsdown Tower. 3. The Vestibule. 4. The Scarlet Drawing Room. 5. The Staircase. 6. View of the Belvidere. 7.
