Folio, 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates, ruled in black, captioned and preserved in a modern full red morocco folder with decorative gilt borders and spine, loose as was issued, trimmed. Bookplate of 'Norman R. Bobins' to front pastedown. Wales was a portrait painter and architectural draughtsman. He was essentially self-taught and painted landscapes in the manner of Poussin. His portraits were exhibited at R.A. between 1783-91, the final year being the year he traveled to India. Twenty-four of Wales's drawings were engraved and appeared in Daniell's Oriental Scenery (see SPL website entry #1400). Wales was working on a series of sketches when he died. Coloured plates in order: 1-2. View(s) of Bombay Harbour. 3-4. View(s) from Malabar Hill. 5. View of the Breach Causeway. 6. View of the Breach from Love Grove. 7-9. View(s) from Belmont. 10. View from Sion Fort. 11. View from the Island of Elephanta. 12. View from Sion Fort.
