"Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary. The present account of the country, accompanied by a number of fine plates, is one of the best illustrated English travels in China. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese Emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer, and the text contains a number of descriptions of Chinese artifacts and novelties" (Hill, Collection of Pacific Voyages).

4to. X 1 l. 632 pp. one hand-coloured engraved portrait as a frontispiece and seven engraved plates, of which four are hand-coloured. Contemporary full calf with decorative gilt to spine, gilt borders to boards, Black title label to spine, marbled endpapers. The second edition of this very popular work on China. With the small armorial bookplate of I. (or J.) M. de Reck tipped in on front paste-down. Slightly foxed throughout, and most plates are a little toned; however, still a good copy in an attractive binding with some minor expert restorations. Barrow was in the suite of the Earl of Macartney's embassy of 1792 to the Emperor of China. Barrow was created a Baronet in 1835. Editions of this work appeared in French in 1805, German in 1805, in Dutch in 1807-09. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece. Portrait of Van - ta - gin. 2. A Foreign Trader / A Rice Mill. 3.
