2 vols; folio and oblong folio atlas of 12 coloured lithographed plates by Bayou after drawings by Nebel, printed on card by Lemercier of Paris. All plates loose in the original portfolio, text in printed wrappers - the whole presented in green morocco-backed gilt ruled, upper cover with ornate cartouche, gilt lettered, green silk ties. Owners signature to text wrapper. The best pictorial record of the war with Mexico. Kendall was a journalist with the New Orleans Picayune and had repeatedly endorsed U.S. military action against Mexico. When war broke out, he "rode with the rangers, witnessed most of Taylor's battles, and himself captured a cavalry flag....he attached himself as a voluntary aide to the staff of Gen. Worth and saw nearly all the fighting from Vera Cruz to Chapultepec. He was mentioned in dispatches and wounded in the knee in the storming of the fortress" (DAB). The plates were produced in Paris, the text printed in New Orleans, and the book being bound and sold by Appleton in New York. Coloured plates in order: 1. Gen. Scott's entrance into Mexico. 2. Bombardment of Vera Cruz. 3. Assault of Contreras. 4. Battle of Churubusco. 5. Battle of Palo Alto. 6. Storming of Chapultepec - Pillow's attack. 7. Storming of Chapultepec - Quitman's attack. 8. Battle of Cerro Gordo. 9. Molino del Rey - attack upon the casa mata. 10. Molino del Rey - attack upon the molino. 11. Battle of Buena Vista. 12. Capture of Monterey.
