Five volumes bound in one. Thick 12mo, contemporary full crimson morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, silver clasps and catches, brown morocco-gilt doublures, Dutch patterned endpapers. Marbles flyleaves, all edges gilt, gauffered and painted. 1726 Pentateuch in Hebrew, published in Amsterdam, with attractive engraved title page by Bernard Picart, a splendid volume, fine condition. "Famed for its beautiful type and its accuracy" (Gans, Memorbook, 186-10). Though he was intimately involved with Amsterdam's Jewish community with his monumental engraved work 'Ceremonies, Moeurs et Costumes Religieuses de tous les peuples du Monde' this was the only Hebrew book for which Bernard Picart prepared engravings. Text in Hebrew. Coloured plates in order: 1. Decorative title page depicts putti supporting an open Torah Scroll, with vignettes illustrating episodes from the lives of Samuel, Moses and David. 2. Decorative title page. [Harftarot readings for synagogue worship chosen from the prophets]. Partially coloured by hand. Slightly damaged, due to oxidation to original green colour pigment.
