A rare example, in that the plates are printed in colours (and not hand coloured). Beautifully bound, from the library of "the father of modern advertising." The words "Engraver to Her Majesty" appear below the name of Tomkins on the dedication. Provenance: Thomas J. Barratt (1841-1914), chairman of the soap manufacturer A. & F. Pears. (bookplate). Folio (47.2 x 37.5cm). Half-title, engraved calligraphic dedication by H. Ashby after T. Tomkins, colour-printed stipple-and line-engraved frontispiece, 6 plates and 15 illustrations by F. Bartolozzi and P.W. Tomkins after W. Hamilton, extra-illustrated with a watercolour drawing based on the frontispiece, signed by W. Hamilton, inlaid before the half title; some marginal spotting in plates, occasional marginal soiling in text leaves, offset from frontispiece on title. Contemporary green straight-grain morocco, wide border made up of inlaid red and black morocco gilt-tooled with alternating lilies and scrolls, inner gilt frame with roll-tooled border of ferns, spine richly gilt, edges gilt, Greek key gold-stamped dentelles with leafy border in blind, crimson watered-silk doublures and endleaves, by Staggmeier & Welcher, in a black morocco slipcase; neat repairs to joints. It is said that perhaps only three copies of this work were issued with the engravings printed in colours; one for Queen Charlotte, one for Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George III, and the other for Walter Fawkes, Esq, of Farnley Hall, which copy this one is said to be. It is evident from the remarkably fine quality of the engravings in this volume that the most exceptional care was taken in the printing; the colours are most brilliant, and the plates are wonderfully fine specimens of colour printing. Colour plates in order: 1. [extra watercolour illustration (not called for) based on the frontispiece illustration - signed by Hamilton]. 2. Frontispiece monument illustration. 3. Vignette of Cupid, Flowers and Doves &c beneath text. 4. Half page plate of 'Spring'. 5. Parental Affection. 6. Small plate depicting a scene of family happiness, beneath text. 7.
