First and only edition of this very rare and stunning American chromolithographic work with lavish color plates. One of the few large-scale American chromolithographic works produced during the Civil War period, and probably the best such work created in 19th- Century America. Van Lennep had been a missionary in Anatolia since 1840 and produced these fascinating costume drawings in oils largely of the Armenians there, but also of Greeks and Jews. This is a rare work.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Folio, pp. 20 colour printed lithographs, lithographed title, and 20 coloured lithographed plates, original brown pebble cloth, gilt embossed vignette to upper board of book title, a woman seated on a camel, shaded by a palm tree, a crescent, and star in the sky. With Bobins bookplate. Van Lennep worked as a missionary among the Armenians from 1840 to 1861 in Tokat, the home of many wealthy Armenians.
