Printed title, preface leaf, and 36 full-page hand-coloured lithographs. Oblong folio, 258 x 335 mm, bound in original decorated boards, hand-coloured, later red cloth spine, new endpapers. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of this educational hand-coloured children's book. Bohny's theories for the education of young people anticipate Froebel's work by utilizing entertaining visual imagery as the primary means of instruction. The illustrations are unusually imaginative, and the hand-colour is of high quality. In 1930 Gumuchian referred to this work as "one of the most popular and entertaining books for young children of the period, inspired by the German kindergarten method. Few copies survive." In this copy, a number of the plates are soiled; the outer corner of the title and preface leaf extended; corners of binding worn and soiled; SCARCE in any condition. Not in NUC.
