First American Edition. Claude François Chauveau-Lagarde (1756 – 1841) was a lawyer who came into the public spotlight in the early stages of the French Revolution. He defended many notable cases during the Reign of Terror, including that of Marie Antoinette.

Extra illustrated with engravings and coloured plates. This extra-illustrated volume has ten black & white engravings, of which at least two are original. There are six hand-coloured full-page plates, including Louis XVI, two Sepia engravings, one black & white photo etching, four black & white photos, one small vignette on the title page, two engraved headpieces, and of course the hand-written letter signed by Claude Francois Chauveau Lagarde. Nicely rebound in 3/4 black Levant over marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. Spine with raised bands and gilt title lettering. Top edge gilt. Octavo. One hundred fifty-four pages plus the extra plates and original letter. Bound in is a folded letter with a wax seal from Marie Antoinette's defense lawyer Claude Francois Chauveau Lagarde (1756-1841). This Autographed letter signed is addressed to "Monsieur J.S. Aubert (could be Monsieru J. Saubert) avocat aux conseils du roi (he uses the old spelling: roy) et al cours de cassation Rue de Seine St. Germain no 64." Monsieur J.S. Aubert lawyer at the king's council and the Supreme Court of Appeal. Rue de Seine St. Germain no. 64. Contents of the letter/note: "Mercredi le 3 Juillet commenceant sortie je ne suis pas chez moi depuis deux heures jusqua quatre. Mais despuls quarte heures iet demie jusqua a six je serai libre de recevoir mon cher confre sil veut bien prendre la peine de venir. Dus reste ce serait pour aujourd hui car demain je pars pour Passy. Tout lui Chaveaulagarde".[Translation into English]: "Wednesday the 3rd of July. On the point of going out, I will not be at home from two to four. But from four-thirty until six I will be free to welcome my dear colleague if he would be so kind as to come. As a matter of fact, it should be today as tomorrow I'm leaving for Passy. Sincerely his Chauveau Lagarde". (Letters by this important lawyer who bravely defended some the French aristocracy are very scarce regardless of their content.) Additional extra material bound in includes an engraving of Chauveau Lagarde extra black & white engravings six hand-coloured engraving of Marie Antoinette, her family, and the king. A photographed document from the original archives in Paris is part of the original state of this edition. Number 128 of a limited edition of 483 copies printed on hand-made linen paper. The front and back of the binding have been professionally reattached. Joints lightly chipped but holding firm. Binding with corners bumped and marbled boards toned. Top of Spine frayed & chipped. Contents and the letter are clean and tight. Very good. This title is by no means difficult to find, but the extra-illustrated" material is very scarce with the ALS is rare.
