Octavo (8 x 7 inches), in original burgundy cloth with a lavishly gilded upper board (in blind to lower board) by Smith Bros, all edges gilt, light foxing to prelims. 18 hand-coloured plates. These works on the Lakes of England would appear to be scarce. Topham was an associate of the New Watercolour Society, from which he resigned, becoming a member of the original Society. Many of his works were displayed in the South Kensington Museum. He had made an extended tour of Europe and was particularly enthusiastic about "the picturesque in Spain." He was also fascinated by Irish and Welsh topography and costume. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontis. Lower Reach - Windermere. 2. Coniston Water. 3. Blea Tarn. 4. Valley of the Stake. 5. Grasmere. 6. Rydal Water. 7. Thirlmere. 8. Vale of St. John. 9. Borrowdale. 10. Buttermere Lake. 11. Crummock Lake. 12. Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lakes. 13. Style Head Tarn. 14. Wastwater and Scawfell Lakes. 15. Ennerdale Lake. 16. Loweswater. 17. Haweswater. 18. Ullswater.
