CLARKE, Mrs Stirling.
The Ladies' Equestrian Guide or, the Habit and the Horse. A Treatise on Female Equitation, with illustrations Lithographed by Messers Day & Son from photographs by Herbert Watkins
In 1857, driven by a perceived lack of literature on the subject, Mrs. J. Stirling Clarke authored The Ladies’ Equestrian Guide as a complete manual to riding for women. The book focuses on the tenets of Victorian horsemanship with particular attention to the manner of dress, selection of horse, saddle, bridle, seat, and styles of riding.
