Second edition with many additions; large paper folio (42 x 28.5 cm. approx.) vii [1] 530 pp. engraved portrait; folding map; 48 aquatint plates, of which 24 are hand-coloured (22 being in two states) by Samuel Alken; 24 uncoloured engraved plates; light offsetting to text; 19 pedigrees (18 folding) original linen-backed boards with (worn) paper label to spine; modern cloth slip-case. Bookplate of "Charles Edward Harris St.John" on front pastedown. The RARE coloured issue. In his notes Abbey states that the copy he describes is "Probably a copy issued for some special patron for no other trace can be found of this book with any plates coloured". Whitaker, a vicar with parishes at Whalley and Blackburn in Lancashire was famous as a topographer concentrating on his own area of Lancashire, and Yorkshire. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontis. 2.
