12mo (6" x 4") bound in a splendid contemporary full red morocco binding with heavily gilded sides of a central lozenge and floral tools and a cottage roof" pattern design, spine in 6 gilded compartments. The upper hinge cracked, and some lesser signs of wear. Spine slightly 'sunned,' marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Complex collation but with 54 FINE CONTEMPORARY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY HAND COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES including frontispiece and one uncoloured. It probably lacks one plate as the uncoloured plate is a frontispiece to 'The Companion to the Altar' and 'The Liturgy of the Church' calls for 55 plates, and this has only 54. Thus sold as a defective copy. Although with some minor oxidization to a few plates, a fine example of contemporary eighteenth-century hand colouring. MS signature of "Susannah Davis, 1772" & "S. Lewis, 1793" on prelims. Coloured plates in order: 1. Title page. The Liturgy of The Church of England... 2. St. Matthew. Chap XXI. Verse 12. Jesus went into the Temple of God. 3. St. Matthew. Chap.
