ALKEN, Henry Thomas.
The Annals of Sporting and Fancy Gazette.
A comprehensive view of the life and habits of those who lived in the English countryside, that is often seen as a companion work to Ackermann's 'Repository of the Arts', which chronicled the taste and fashions of sophisticated metropolitan life. A cornerstone of any sporting library.

FIRST EDITION. 13 volumes, 8vo., 153 engraved plates including 53 hand-coloured, after Samuel Alken, Herring, Egerton, Davis, R. Cruikshank, and others. Numerous vignettes throughout, without the very rare June 1828 issue as often. Later red half morocco gilt rule to boards and decorative sporting gilt panels to the spine for Chas. J. Sawyer of London, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, an attractive set in good condition. Book-plate to front paste-down of each volume. A magazine entirely appropriated to sporting subjects and fancy pursuits; containing everything worthy of remark on hunting, shooting, coursing, racing, fishing, cocking, pugilism, wrestling, single stick, pedestrianism, cricket, billiards, rowing, sailing &c. &c. An excellent companion work to Ackermann's “Repository of the Arts.” Just as that work chronicles the taste and fashions of sophisticated metropolitan life, so the “Annals” provide a comprehensive view of the life and habits of those who lived in the English countryside.
