2 vols; 4to, Vol 1: title, dedication, preface and a list of Persian rulers, index, 720pp. text. Vol 2: half-title, title, contents, list of plates, index 869pp. text. Five hand-coloured plates split over the 2 vols. Full tan calf with gilt fillets to boards, spine in six compartments, gilt to three, black and red morocco labels to three, marbled edges, inner dentelles in gilt. A pair of bookplates to front pastedowns, marbled end-papers. The author was an artist and a diplomat, and in 1804 he was appointed as a historical painter to the Czar of Russia. In 1817 he began his long journey through the Caucasus to Teheran, Ispahan, Bagdad, and Scutari. His account of his travels was well received. "This huge book is full of interest and is a great advance upon previous volumes of travel, as illustrated by bold drawings of mountain scenery, works of art and antiquities" (DNB). Both vols have been professionally repaired with fresh cloth inner hinges, re-spined with matching leather, and the original spine relaid. Rebinding and restoration work on this book was carried out by Ron Norman of Hartlepool (Ronnorn@aol.com) Coloured plates in order: Volume 1. 1. A Persian Lady. 2. Persian Khan. 3. A Persian Woman enveloped in her Chadre. 4. A Wild Ass. Volume 2. 5. A Soldier of the European Organization in the Service of Abbas Mirza.
