Folio (43 x 28 x 6.5 cm). 3 volumes bound in 1. In beautiful contemporary gold stamped leather binding with raised bands to spine, six compartments, with black leather title in the second compartment. eight brass corner pieces and a pair of clasps, with a gilt-edged text-block (browned in places). Title- label renewed. The dedication accompanying the first portrait is pasted onto the French title page, due to this the list of subscribers on the verso dedication and the short recto French title page are no longer visible. One leaf of plates is derived from another edition and has deviating numbers. A wonderful historical biblical account by the French theologian Jakob Basnage (1653-1723). The work is illustrated (not all coloured) with 2 frontispieces, 2 portraits, 6 maps, a double page engraving of Solomon's Temple, and the famous engravings and tailpieces of Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). The engravings are printed on 82 leaves which are bound near the corresponding text. Under each of the engravings is an explanatory poem by Abraham Alewyn (1664-1721), who also translated the French text into Dutch. This 8th edition is dedicated to Joh Trip, and contains his (uncoloured) portrait - this is the only addition with the extra portrait. The 6 maps are wonderfully engraved by Daniel Stoopendahl and are most attractively coloured and heightened in gold. Coloured plates in order: 1. Header and Tail pieces (Op de tytel-Prent van' t Oude Testament). 2. Frontispiece. (De Historien van het Oude en Nieuwe Testament). 3. [Map] The location of Paradise and the land of Canaan, as well as the first inhabited lands of the Patriarchs. 4. [Map] A map of the World recently edited and brought to light. 5. [Map] Peregrination of the children of Israel from Egypt, the Red Sea and the Desert, to the promised land of Canaan. 6. Double page bird's-eye view of the City of Jerusalem. 7.
