COCKBURN, Major James.
Swiss Scenery from Drawings by Major Cockburn.
James Pattison Cockburn [1779-1847] was an army officer and watercolourist. According to German composer Louis Spohr (to whom he showed more than 200 landscapes of Naples and its surroundings), Cockburn had an extraordinary skill in catching charming views in a matter of minutes. He became an indefatigable sketcher. In the period 1816-22, he produced drawings in sepia as he moved from place to place in the Alps and elsewhere in Italy and Switzerland.
