A first edition - later states had the publisher's catalogue at the back, dated 1866 while retaining the original 1862 pub date. Half green calf over marbled boards with a beautiful gilt pattern to spine compartments; title in gilt to spine; raised bands to spine; marbled edges and endpapers. Spine and inner hinges have been professionally re-backed, corners repaired, etc., boards slightly rubbed but the text block is as tight as new; text, lithos & maps are pristine (with two minor exceptions). 4 lithos & 2 fold-out maps. Penciled in on the title page; is "Mary Anne & Fanny Peale." Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece. Piz Bernia and the Morteratsch Glacier. 2. [Folding coloured map] Alps of Glarus and part of the neighbouring Cantons. 3. Maloggia and Piz Forno. 4. View up the Val Malenco from Alp Palu. 5. Am Platz in the Davos Thal. 6.
