First edition; folio (37 x 28 cm) additional lithographed title with hand coloured vignette on India paper. 12 fine hand coloured lithographs - heightened with Gum-Arabic by T. Fairland after Landseer, A. Cooper & C. Handcock. Marginal soiling, a little light spotting, contemporary half calf gilt, lightly rubbed, a good copy. This work was intended to be the first in a series of annuals '...it is hoped that The Sportsman's Annual, in this, its first dress and on its debut, will not retire from the field unpatronised, it is fair to state that next year's Volume will be more elaborately and variously illustrated...' (preface). For whatever reason, no further volumes were in fact published, but artistically at least this annual was a success with plates of high quality, beautifully coloured, the animals set against fully coloured landscape backgrounds. Coloured Plates in Order: 1. Deerhound. 2. Fox Hound. 3. Newfoundland. 4. Greyhound. 5. Spaniel. 6. Water Spaniel. 7. Blood Hound. 8. Harrier. 9. Beagle. 10. Setter. 11. Terrier. 12. Pointer.
