ALKEN, Henry Thomas.
Sporting Scrap Book, by Henry Alken, containing fifty plates, designed and engraved by himself.
A fine copy of this charming example of the best of Alken's engraved works. As the title suggests, the images offer a spectacular sampling of images, sometimes more than one to a plate which includes portraits of particular breeds of dogs, hunting scenes, racing, general equestrian scenes, fishing, shooting & dogs fighting. Most have a sporting element but also included are several general tableaux of country life, brick-making, a country fair, a turnpike gate, etc.

Large octavo. Letterpress title otherwise engraved throughout. 50 fine hand-coloured soft-ground etched plates by Henry Alken. Later red morocco by W. Root & Son of London; boards with a gilt border composed from triple fillets and a dog-tooth roll spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartment, others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from small tools around a more prominent central flower tool; gilt inner dentelles; purple coloured endpapers; all gilt edges.
