After the arrival of the Portuguese court in 1808, the Brazilian Royal Press was created and, with it, the main printing techniques began to develop there. In 1825, the Brazilian government founded the first printing school at the Military Academy and hired the young Swiss Johann Jacob Steinmann to direct it.

[Memories of Rio de Janeiro, drawings from Nature...] FIRST EDITION. Oblong folio, 12 hand-coloured lithographed plates, original illustrated wrappers with added gouache within a black border after drawings by the author, each mounted on buff card as issued, with tissue guards. Title to upper wrapper surrounded by vignettes, without text as issued. Preserved in a modern blue cloth box backed by black morocco, gilt leather label to spine. Swiss-born Steinmann introduced the art of lithography into Brazil. He traveled to Rio de Janeiro in 1825, under Military contract to the Military Archieve, where he lectured until 1830. The plates provide a vivid record of the city. Coloured plates in order: 1. Ilha das Corbas. 2. Moro do Castello & da Praya d'Ajuda. 3. Vista do Sacco d'Alferes & de St. Cristovao. 4.
