EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION FROM AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION of these magnificent plates of Javanese costume, life, and topography as recorded by the author during his service in Java, 1819-1827. Josef Jakob Xaver Pfyffer zu Neueck came from the Lucerne patrician Pfyffer family and was the son of the trader and straw hat maker Josef.

Leather title label to spine. 15 finely hand-coloured lithographed plates by Franz Hurter and others, heightened with gum Arabic, folding lithographed map of Java, 4pp., introduction, text (pp.[1]-92), descriptive list of the plates separately paginated (pp.[1]-11). Unpaginated leaf bound within plates “Javan’sches alphabet” (recto) and “Javan’sche zahlen” (verso). A rare work on the Indonesian island of Java, covering the geography, topography, costumes, natural history, music, geology, religion, and language of the Javanese people. Colour plates in order: 1.
