FIRST EDITION, 8vo, (225 x 145 mm) hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece of the battle of Santarem (1834), vignette on the title page, an engraved map showing the position of Donna Maria's army before the battle, pages xvi, 328, rebound in modern dark brown quarter calf, gilt lettering and rules between raised bands to spine, marbled boards, black endpapers. Light age-browning and foxing, mainly to margins, two small holes to 1 margin not affecting text, offsetting from map slightly affecting the following two leaves, several outer margins ragged somewhat due to bad opening, not affecting text, long neat ink inscription on first free endpaper, otherwise a very good tight copy of a scarce book. Major-General Sir James Edward Alexander KStJ (1803 ? 1885) witnessed the Portuguese civil wars, at the time he was Captain in the 42nd Royal Highlanders, Lieut-Colonel in the Portuguese Service. Much of his book is taken up with the war, but he also writes extensively on Portuguese life, customs, trade, scenery, buildings, etc. Coloured plates in order: 1. Santarem.
