FIRST [and only] EDITION. Folio, lithographed vignette title with a view of Liverpool, lithographed dedication to the Duke, plate list, text. Twenty-eight lithotints, finished by hand and dated 1850. 3/4 morocco over green cloth gilt. Spine with gilt letters raised bands, decorative gilt compartments, gilt to boards, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A coat-of-arms surrounded by a large circular title in gilt has been affixed to the front pastedown; also loosely inserted is a contemporary newspaper cutting concerning the artist, and an uncoloured woodcut engraved portrait of the artist, taken from the Illustrated London News. The "Resolution" cruised via the Kyles of Bute, Skye, Mull, Isles of Rum and Egg, Inverlochy, Glen Nevis, Lerwick, and returned to Leith Waters. An attractive series of views. Schetky was born in Cheshire and had been appointed court artist to King George IV, and at the time of making these plates, was in the service of Queen Victoria as her court painter for marine subjects. Lord John Manners, son of the Duke of Rutland, mentioned in the title, and later himself to become The Duke of Rutland, wrote the text for the plates. Coloured plates in order: 1. Title page.
