SHAKESPEARE, William.
Thomas Stothard.
Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man Illustrated.
One of the most well-known poems of William Shakespeare, a great English poet and playwright, describes the circle of human life. Shakespeare ingeniously compares the periods of life to theatre plays, where actors – people – play their roles until they go away from the stage forever.

8 superb folio stipple engraved hand-coloured copperplates (including the title), each engraved by William Bromley after drawings by Thomas Stothard, depicting man from his 'infancy' through to his 'second childishness.' An additional engraved page of text. Accompanied by 14pp of supportive text. Slim folio, handsomely bound in contemporary full dark blue morocco; ornate gilt-stamped spine and fillet borders (well-rubbed extremities but still sound and attractive); marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Title in gilt to upper board. FIRST EDITION with plates bearing the 1794 watermark. A lovely copy of this beautifully printed book. Collins Shoe Lane published the plates; text was printed by C. Whittingham. Plates are very clean though there is some offsetting from the illustrations onto facing pages and some light foxing on text pages. The bookplates of "Thomas Hutton" & "Graham M. Adee" are on front pastedown. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece. 2. The Infant. 3. The School Boy. 4. The Lover. 5. The Soldier. 6. The Justice. 7. Pantaloon. 8. Second Childishness.
