PAPWORTH, John.
Select Views of London...
This book illustrates some views (notably those of large squares, churches, and important public buildings) of the city with extensive histories of each. John Papworth (1775-1847) was originally destined for the clergy, but his artistic ability was spotted by the architect William Chambers who encouraged his father to foster his talent. In 1798 Papworth entered the Royal Academy schools and was soon exhibiting works at the Academy. Through his association with the publisher Rudolph Ackermann, Papworth began to be noticed for his designs and was commissioned by clients including Princess Charlotte, the daughter of George IV, and her husband Prince Leopold, for whom he designed a garden at their home, Claremont. Papworth's association with Ackermann resulted in several publications.
