Folio, title and text in English and French, engraved map of part of the rivers Ganges, Munma, Goomty and Gogra. 48 hand coloured aquatint plates, full red morocco, elaborately gilt, tooled by Kalthoeber, inlaid central panel of cross back-grain morocco bordered with inlay of tan, red and green calf. Six pairs of raised bands by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Bookplate of Calvin Bullock to front pastedown. Hodge executed these drawings while in India as the guest of Warren Hastings. Hodge entered India via Madras, then travelled up the Coromandel coast to visit Calcutta, Bengal, Patna, Benares and Bidjegur before returning to Calcutta due to illness. After recovery he visited Allahabad, Cawnpoor, Lucknow, Agra and Fyzabad. Thomas Daniell mastered the art of aquatinting in order to emulate Hodge's commercial success. Coloured plates in order: 1.
