Full-leather. Book Condition: Near Fine. FIRST EDITION. (9 3/4" x 12"). A rare original presentation copy to James T. Fields of London 1852 and from the library of Carlos Wilson, the foremost collector of Napoleon (sold at auction Oct. 1907) Wilson conceived the idea of making this book the basis of an extra-illustrated volume. Each page of text is inlaid (122pp) and extra-illustrated with rare portraits and prints from Wilson's collection. The late Lucius Poole meticulously did the inlaying. Beautifully bound by Sanford in full crushed green levant morocco elaborately tooled from Wilson's design of bees crowns and large capital N and with a crown stamped on sides elaborate inner gilt dentelles with crown and "N" to each corner. Gray silk endpapers, top edge, and board edges gilt, housed in a felt bound slipcase. Among the 83 inserted portraits and plates is a fine mezzotint portrait of Napoleon engraved by Tielker after Isabey. India proof portrait of Thackeray; portrait of Oliver Goldsmith; David Hume engraved by Lallemand; original portrait of Napoleon engraved by Benoist after J. Goubaud with many other fine engravings in color and aquatint together with a series of wood engravings by A.B. Frost for an illustrated edition of Thackeray's 'Chronicle of the Drum' each wood engraving neatly split and mounted on india paper as a proof copy.
