Title from spine label. Folio (14 1/16" x 10 11/16"; 357 x 270 mm.). One uncoloured lithographed plate (4 1/2" x 7 5/8"; 114 x 194 mm), mounted to size, and twelve numbered hand-coloured lithographed plates (Plates 1-11 each with two captioned vignettes and plate 12 with one captioned vignette). Plates lithographed by Delpech. Bound to contemporary style in modern full dark green morocco. Gilt ruled borders, gilt panel, gilt lettering and ornaments to spine. Minimal foxing, some faint offsetting from the plates. Short, closed tear (1/2 inch) to lower blank margin of Plate 4, two short tears (1 inch and 1 1/8 inch) to outer margin and one tear (1/2 inch) to lower margin of Plate 8, two short tears (1/2 inch and 1 inch) to outer margin and one tear (1/2 inch) to lower margin of Plate 10, a few additional tiny marginal tears. An excellent copy of this extremely scarce series of plates. We have been unable to locate any copies of a series of plates by Monnier with this title (Les Péchés capitaux). The two images from the ninth plate “L’Envie” and “L’Orgueil” are reproduced in the Aristide Marie book on Henry Monnier on pages 20 and 26. Of Monnier, the humorist, Bret Harte, the American author wrote, "It is only the true humorist who knows how to ensnare his audience and at the same time amuse himself with his own humour." Monnier grew up in post revolutionary France and matured in Restoration France - and it is this France that he depicted so beautifully and brilliantly. Coloured plated in order: 1. [Not captioned.] 2. “Des Visites” and “Une Rencontre;” 3. “Les Commères” and “L’Ecrivain Public;” 4. “Bureau de Loterie” and “Des Oppositions;” 5. “Aliénés” and second vignette not captioned; 6. “Un Exemple” and “Mystificateurs;” 7. “Soirée Bourgeoise” and “Récréation populaire;” 8. “Delassemens” and “Inutilités;” 9. “L’Envie” and “L’Orgueil;” 10. “La Luxuré” and “La Gourmandise;” 11. “La Paresse” and “Lavarice;” 12. “La Colère.”
