Gold tooled half calf, boards rubbed and worn in places, spine is divided into 7 compartments via decorative gilt rolls, gold-tooled red morocco spine label in the second compartment, repeat designs in third to sixth compartments. Marbled end papers. From the renowned hunting collection of Marcel Jeanson (1885-1942), with his bookplate and MS item number '1622'. With occasional minor foxing in the frontispieces and text leaves, but in very good overall condition. A rare complete first edition copy in the original German with a French translation of Ridinger's wonderful series of quadrupeds, beautifully coloured and most plates in fine condition. Large plates showing wild and domestic animals by the south German painter, engraver, draughtsman and publisher, Johann Elias Ridinger. A second edition appeared in Augsburg in 1786 under the title 'Natturhistprisches Original Thierwerk', with smaller uncoloured plates and an unreliable text.
