FIRST EDITION. Preface, dedication. 2 parts in one volume. Part I: British India and the Punjab; Part II: Kashmir and the Alpine Punjab. Folio, 26 hand-coloured tinted lithographed plates, all mounted on card, on guards, in original publisher's green cloth with half morocco, gilt morocco label to upper board, ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt and with raised bands in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Hinges and corners rubbed, MS dedication to title page: 'J.Gladstone from his affectionate Thomas Bateson (?), January 1849'. Some foxing throughout. The author was a good painter of watercolours. In 1847 his friends in England published a folio entitled 'Recollections in India' from his drawings in India. The most interesting of these are portraits of Sikh chieftains and scenery views in Kashmir (then an almost unknown country). Coloured plates in order: Part I. 1. Frontispiece.
