Vacher de Charnois undertook this publication after having been obliged to abandon that of the Costumes and Annals of the Great Theaters (1786-1789) at the start of the Revolution; he succumbed during the massacres of September 1792. Collaborateur du Journal des Théâtres, Le Vacher de Charnois (1750?-1792) ne put poursuivre ses recherches. Incarcéré, il périt victime des massacres de septembre 1792. First edition of this sought-after work of which most of the 55 plates, engraved by Alix, Ridé and Sergent after Chéry were finely colored at the time.
