Modern half red morocco (re-backed), contemporary boards covered with gilt-lettered blind-stamped red imitation leather with ties at three sides, original front wrapper with a lithographed title of an instalment issued in 1845 preserved. Series of 36 numbered contemporary hand-coloured lithographed plates with a glossy finish. It is a colourful series of 36 large military costume plates with over 200 military figures in their 'natural surroundings': camping, in battle, on horseback, on the march, etc. Starting with the Garde du Corps in their Gala uniforms, there are plates of the Garde Cuirassier, Garde Husaren, Garde Ulanen-Regiment, Garde Dragoner, Garde Regiment zu Fuss, Garde Jäger, Blücher'sches Husaren-Regiment, Gendarmes, etc. Plate 8 shows the uniforms of the Kaiser Franz and Kaiser Alexander Grenadier-Regiment. The work is in certain ways a continuation of Das preussische Heer with plates by Elzholz, Rechlin, and Schulz, also published by Sachse in Berlin in 1830 (Lipperheide 2165). It contains uniforms with the alterations which were introduced under Friedrich Wilhelm IV, especially the well-known so-called 'Pickelhaube.' The Pickelhaube was originally designed in 1842 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, maybe as a copy of similar helmets that were adopted at the same time by the Russian military. Good copy, newly bound with use of the original portfolio boards, with bookplate of Freiherr G.A. von Liebenstein on upper pastedown and his owner's entry on the preserved front wrapper.- (Without the almost always lacking supplement (1854) of 6 (9) plates; most plates with marginal folds from former framing and all plates mounted on new guards (originally published loose in portfolio); occ. sl. foxed/ yellowed).
