Paris: Sébastien Huré, 1645.

Prayerbook in French and in Latin. 'Les Saincts devoirs de l'ame devote'. Octavo. Including: L'Office de la Vierge Marie pour tous les temps de l'annee. 2 parts in 1 volume, with 2 title-pages, each with a different woodcut device showing a holy figure in a heart, a woodcut headpiece, 6 woodcut decorative initials, and decorations built up from cast fleurons. Extra illustrated with 15 later 17th- and early 18th-century engraved plates of saints, drawn, engraved or published by Pierre Mariette, P. Bertrand, Matheus, Herman Weyen, Jean Picart and Firens. With all plates, the title-page devices, headpiece, decorative initials and built-up decorations are beautiful, lavishly hand-coloured, and highlighted with gold. With a manuscript calligraphic dedication panel (ca. 1800) from Jacques Le Loy to Anne Rouveau on a flyleaf at front and her manuscript "AR II" monogram on drapery at back, both painted in gold, blue, red and grey. [12], 286, [2]; 224 pp. [Later] Mottled tanned sheepskin (ca. 1800) with a richly gold-tooled spine with gilt raised bands, a deep red morocco title label, marbled endpapers and a fragile green, red and yellow ribbon marker. An extremely rare French Jesuit prayer book, the first part with prayers in French and Latin and the main text of the second part (the Offices of the Virgin) in Latin. The present copy has been extensively extra illustrated with 15 engraved plates showing saints, all plates and decorations have been coloured by hand with opaque gouaches and highlighting in gold, and a calligraphic dedication panel and monogram have been added (the lettering of the dedication in blue on a gold panel). The dedication reads, "A Madame Anne Rouveau par son tres humble et obeissant serviteur Jacques Le Loy" and the "AR LI" monogram at the end appears on a painting of blue drapery. The monogram suggests a noble woman, but we have not identified her. Perhaps it is an elaborate piece of flattery. The prayer book is sometimes attributed to the Jesuit Pierre Coton (1564-1626). We have found no prayer book with a closely matching title in Paris before one published by André Soubron in 1644. The Offices could have been published separately, but is noted on the title-page of the first part. Coton's Offices of the Virgin first appeared in 1618, and Huré published an edition in 1649. If the present edition is Coton's, it was revised after 1623, for the title page of the Offices notes that it was "reveu & corrigé" by Popes Clement [VIII] and Urban VIII, the latter Pope from 1623 to 1644. We have located only one other copy, at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. In good condition, a few leaves with minor marginal defects, not approaching the text, and with the colouring sometimes offset onto facing pages. Second copy located of a Jesuit prayer book, elaborately dressed up for presentation ca. 1800. Coloured plates in order: Book 1. 1. Flyleaf. [Calligraphic dedication panel]. 2. S. Anna. 3.
