Folio. (46x x 33 cm). 31 fine full page hand-coloured lithographed plates (of 24 subjects, 7 in an additional variant issue) plus an additional uncoloured prooof plate of Byron dated 1825, signed by Friedel, plus the exceedingly rare monochrome portrait of Lord Cochrane, great Admiral of the Greek Fleet. Bound out of sequence in 19th century green moire boards with red morocco gilt decorated title on upper board. Dual French & English text. Some plates are loose. "There is some confusion as to Friedel's origins. He is supposed to be a Danish philhellene and was apparently passing himself off as a baron. St. Clair tells us that Friedel carried a lithographic press on his back through Greece, that he was at Missolonghi for a period with Byron, and that he married the sister of John Hodges, on of Byron's artificers. A letter from Byron introducing Friedel to the notice of the London Greek Committee is known. Whatever the facts, Friedel appears to have been in Greece from 1821 to mid-1824. He settled in England, and his first lithograph (Mavrocordato) appears with the date Sept. 1824" (Blackmer). Coloured plates - loose: 1.
