RARE. 3 vols. FIRST EDITION. Each volume illustrated with a b/w engraved frontispiece and coloured aquatint plates enhanced by hand. Vol. I with a pictorial engraved title page illuminated in gilt. Vol. I: [ii] [i-iii] iv [1] 2-311 [312]; Vol. II: [ii] [1] 2-311 [312]; Vol. III: [ii] 2-336 pp. Hardcover. 8vo. Handsomely bound by Bumpus of Oxford in full brown morocco. Original green boards and gilt lettered spines bound in. Raised bands elaborately tooled compartments with central floral devices. Panels double ruled in gilt. Gilt turn-ins with single rule and dotted frames. Gilt corner devices. Top edge gilt others untrimmed. A lovely copy. This work was edited by Paul Patterson and began publication in monthly parts but only four parts were issued and it was completed and published in book form in 1841. All illustrations were drawn and etched by Isaac Robert Cruikshank including the engraved title page which is usually lacking. This copy contains seven instead of eight hand coloued plates. From the Library of the noted collector Sir David Salomons Bart. of Tunbridge Wells with his armorial bookplate on front pastedown of all three volumes. This is a scarce title containing very interesting sketches of contemporary American life and manners. Originally issued in monthly parts 1840-41. Selected from the papers of Mr Hugo Playfair. Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856) was the less well known brother of George Cruikshank, both caricaturists, illustrators and portrait miniaturists. The two did collaborate on various works.
