Folio, engraved title, 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates, in contemporary straight-grained black morocco, tooled in blind, and gilt to an Etruscan design. Havell was a landscape painter, the son of a drawing master at Reading. In 1804 he became one of the founder members of the Royal Society of Painters in Water- Colours. He was one of the finest early watercolour artists and did much to advance the art. Between 1817 and 1825, Havell traveled in India, pursuing his profession as an artist for profit; he later visited Florence, Naples, and Rome. He also accompanied Lord Amherst's Embassy to China.
