In 1836, Madou obtained a gold medal at the Brussels Salon with "The physiognomy of society in Europe from 1400 to the present day", an album of plates, a sort of costume encyclopedia, published in 1835-1836 by Antoine Dewasme. JEAN BAPTISTE MADOU (1796-1877), a Belgian painter and lithographer.

Contemporary ¼ morocco with marble boards, flat spine, endpapers marbled. Restoration to board edges, joints, and spine. Complete with 15 hand-coloured plates with decorative borders, including the lithograph frontispiece. Large oblong folio. Edges and corners bumped, head and tail of spine chipped, plate 10 is loose, otherwise, in excellent condition, text and plates are clean and crisp. Pagination: P. (2), title, blank, 1-3, blank, frontis, then plates. Text in French. Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796-1877) received an education in military art and topography, eventually becoming an art professor at the military college of Belgium. He also taught art to the royal family's children and aided in the decoration of the Château de Ciergnon (Benezit). “For several years, he devoted himself chiefly to lithography,” writes Bryan, “and illustrated many works in that fashion. Among these [is] … ‘Physionomie de la société en Europe' (1837)…. After 1840, however, he chiefly devoted himself to genre painting, in which he achieved a high reputation ...
