DALE, Lieut, R.
HAVELL, Robert jnr.
Panoramic View of King George Sound, part of the colony of Swan River 1834.
The Panoramic View of King George's Sound originated with sketches made by Dale from the summit of Mount Clarence. As an experienced topographic surveyor and cartographer with military training in field sketching, Dale's sketches were a highly accurate and effective representation of the scene.

PANORAMA - 4to; Drawn by Lieut, R. Dale 63rd Regt. In 1834 Robert Dale published a panorama print of the view from Mount Clarence in London, accompanied by a pamphlet (missing) describing the sound and the geography, geology, flora, fauna, and native inhabitants of the immediate region. Colour lithograph panoramic print (c. 8 1/5 x 109 ½ in.-sheet), housed in contemporary green cloth folder, re-backed and cornered in modern green buckram. Leather title label in gilt letters to cover. The Upper board is stained, some folds worn. The Panorama shows fledgling English soldiers trading with the local aboriginals in the Mount Clarence hills above the newly formed settlement of Albany, on the very southern portion of the West Australian coast. There are two harbours located within the sound, Princess Royal Harbour and Oyster Harbour. This is a winter scene, showing the small settlement of Albany, and its public buildings, comprising of a jail, a barrack house, and a general store, together with private dwellings of low mud, brick, and wood, roofed with thatch. Bold promontories, granite hills, and a fine sound and harbour are depicted. Two islands are prominent: Breaksea and Michaelmass. The Banksia, Nuytsia, Mahogany, and Kingia trees are local flora on display. To the extreme right of the panorama, the Porrongurup Range is to be seen. Also, to the right of the panorama, a group of soldiers and local aborigines are seen returning from a kangaroo hunting expedition. Their chief, Nakinna, is to be seen among the aboriginal party.
