FIEBIG, Frederick.
[Panoramic View of Calcutta.]
Frederick Fiebig recorded views of Calcutta in both lithographic and photographic form in the mid-19th Century when the former medium began to be replaced by the latter. In addition to this panorama of Calcutta, Fiebig executed four other (undated) lithographs of the city, before he then produced numerous photographs in 1851. Fiebig's lithograph is engraved from his drawing (he also executed the drawing on stone) from the viewpoint of the Ochterlony Monument, through 360 degrees, starting with the view to the South (Alipore), taking in the Strand, Cricket Ground, Town Hall, Government House, Esplanade Row across to Ghouringhee.

A small oblong folio and six hand-coloured lithographed plates with captions combine to make a long panoramic view of the city. Images within a double black rule, in modern black morocco-backed marbled boards, upper board with title lettered direct in gilt. Fresh endpapers and prelims. A scarce work with no copies at auction recorded on ABPC. Only a few copies were published, as is often the case with Calcutta publishing. Coloured plates in order: 1. [showing] Alipore / Kidderpore / Gardenreach / Fort William. 2. [showing] Strand/ Cricket Ground. 3. [showing] Town Hall / Government House. 4. [showing] Esplanade Row / Mosque. 5. [showing] Chouringhee. 6. (Untitled plate).
