[BROUGHTON, Francis].
W. A. Delamotte.
Overland Journey to India from Original Sketches.
First and sole edition of this notably scarce and highly appealing suite of plates, this the rare hand-coloured issue; the copies at the British Library and V&A copy are uncoloured. Abbey remarks that it was "probably privately produced for distribution to Broughton's (and Delamotte's?) friends". Surgeon-Major Francis Broughton (1817-1882) served with the Bombay Medical Department in New Zealand aboard the East Indiaman Elphinstone, was present during the Flagstaff War of 1845-6, and the capture of the pah (defensive settlement) of the prominent Maori chief Te Ruki Kawiti. He also served during the Indian Rebellion, and was present at the taking of Kolapur. He was appointed Surgeon in 1860, and Surgeon-Major in 1863, retiring in 1871.
