COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION of this immensely popular work by two of the best-known nineteenth-century writers in Indonesia. From his arrival in Indonesia in 1842 Jhr. J.C. Rappard (1824-1898) specialised in painting topographical views and depicting European social life in Indonesia. Many of these colour plates were made from those paintings but many were created in Leiden by Sijthoff from photographs or existing prints. This was just the beginning of the age of photomechanical printing when the photographer began to replace both the artist and the artist-engraver in book illustration.

FIRST EDITION. 4 vols; small folio, lithographed titles, 103 chromolithographed plates, mounted on heavy paper after drawings by Rappard. Original red morocco-backed embossed red cloth. Spine in gilded compartments, boards stamped in blind and gilt. Slight wear to head and tail of spines, corners bumped and rubbed. A rare complete set of Batavia, Java, Buitzorg, and other possessions. The work represents a romanticised account of the country and enjoyed considerable popularity despite its high price. This beautiful production is distinguished in the history of Indonesian illustration because the lithographs were produced from original photographs and not drawings.
