Folio, 52 (of 56) coloured lithographed plates, loose as issued, most after Van Pers, and lithographed by Mieling. Each plate has a double-sided descriptive leaf of text in French and Dutch. Folder of contemporary orange boards, with red cloth back. Decorative title embossed in gilt to upper board. Boards rubbed and worn, preserved in a burgundy coloured box with gilt title to spine. Many of the plates are of Chinese life, characters, and costume, but also of Java and its inhabitants, cultivating rice, flying a kite, smoking opium, warriors in Borneo, etc. Van Pers was born in Doornail and sailed for Indonesia after enlisting in the army. In 1839 he was appointed engraver and draughtsman in the Geographical Department of the Bureau of Statistics in the General Secretariat, Buitenzorg. A few years later, he moved to the recently established printing office of the Topographical Bureau of the Engineers. While there, he provided lithographs for Junghuhn, and at this time, he was taken on by the booksellers Ukena & Co., Batavia, to work with Ernest Hardouin. Eventually, Van Pers had to leave Indonesia because of poor health. Coloured plates not in probable order: 1. Title page. 2. Een Chinees in een Tandoe. 3. Eene pseudo slavin en een pseudo Sinjo. 4.
