Narrative of a Visit to Brazil, Chile, Peru and the Sandwich Islands During the Years 1821 and 1822 with Miscellaneous Remarks on the Past and Present State and Political Prospects of Those Countries
"Gilbert Mathison arrived at Honolulu on the U.S. ship America from Callao, June 24, 1822, and departed on the same ship 'in company with the American ship Howqua' for Canton, August 10, 1822. Mathison made a tour around Oahu via the Pali to Waialua and described a heiau at Waikiki. He interviewed the missionaries, Hiram Bingham and William Ellis, visited the King, Keeaumoku, Kalanimoku, and Don Marin, the Spaniard" (Forbes 610).

8vo [23.5 x 15 cm]; xii, [i], 478, [ii, ads] pp, 4 aquatint plates including 3 hand-coloured, folding engraved map of Sandwich Islands, with Woahoo inset. Bound in original paper boards with new spine and endpapers, spine with black title lettering, edges of boards a little rubbed, edges uncut, MS signature in ink to upper margin of title, light offsetting of frontis on the title page, a very good clean and sound copy. More than a third of the book relates to Brazil; the author gives an account of Rio de Janeiro and its environs...the rest of the book concerns Chile, Peru, and the Hawaiian Islands...much on cultural life. The description of Hawaii includes the natives, missionaries, government, the royal family, shipping, Canton trade, etc. The plates include riding costumes of Peruvian females, costume plates of females of Lima, a Sandwich Islander in native costume with a spear, and ancient stone with drawings found in Woahoo.
